How to Remove Snow & Ice from Composite Decking

Composite decking is quickly becoming the dream deck material thanks to its gorgeous style, its legendary lifespan, and how little work it takes to maintain it. However, winter weather possesses a unique challenge for composite decking. Homeowners with composite decks — and even homeowners considering building their dream composite decks — often want to know how to safely remove snow and ice from their beautiful outdoor living spaces.

Removing snow and ice from your composite deck is a matter of using the right tools and the right products that get rid of the snow without damaging the deck surface. Don’t worry, though — we explain everything in our composite decking winter maintenance guide.

Composite decking materials boast an easy maintenance routine compared to traditional wood decks — this holds true with winter chores as well.

At Keystone Custom Decks, we’re expert composite deck builders who understand how the material performs in ALL seasons. Learn how to safely remove snow and ice from composite decking easily — without doing any harm.

Can I Shovel My Composite Deck?

shoveling a composite deck

When several inches of snow blanket your outdoor space, you’re going to want to clear it just like your driveway. While you wouldn’t think to use a snow blower on your deck, can you shovel it?

You can safely shovel a composite deck, but you need to make sure you are using the right shovel. A shovel with a metal cutting edge will nick, cut, and damage your composite deck surface. However, a plastic shovel or rubber-edged shovel is safe to use on your composite deck. Make sure you have an appropriate shovel ready for the first snowfall.

Use a Broom or Leaf Blower for Light Snow

During a light snow, you won’t even need to use a shovel on your deck. We’ve seen homeowners enjoy a lot of success just by sweeping snow away with a broom — which is much easier than shoveling. Plus, while you’d never want to endanger your deck with the blades of a snow blower, a leaf blower is 100% safe for your composite deck.

Is Ice Melt or Rock Salt Safe for Composite Decking?

While getting rid of snow is a pretty simple matter, a thin sheet of ice can be a different story. If ice forms on your deck surface, you’ll need to find a way to melt it. While using an icebreaker to smash up ice on your driveway is a viable strategy, trying that on your composite deck can lead to some pretty unsightly damage.

Instead, you’ll want to melt the ice. Calcium chloride-based ice melt is safe for composite decks and is our recommended solution. This compound is highly effective at melting ice without scratching the composite surface. We do not recommend using traditional sodium chloride rock salt or sand as the granules of either one can leave unattractive and permanent marks.

Composite Deck Advantages

Composite decks prove to be a fantastic marriage of style and substance. On the aesthetic front, composite decks come in a wide variety of colors perfect for complementing a variety of home color schemes. On the practical side, they maintain their look and their performance without much of a time investment on the part of the homeowner.

A result of the 21st-century engineering in every composite deck board, these unique advantages stand out in comparison to traditional wooden decks. Wooden decks require frequent sealing, staining, and repainting to maintain their look and watertight seal. In addition, wooden decks have the unfortunate tendency to splinter and warp over time.
